Zero landfill from your black bins! Plus top recycling rates

Great landfill and recycling news

Avonmouth recycling plant

It can be a lot of effort to sort through your waste to sort it all out for recycling. Clearly though we are all doing something right. A report published by Government earlier this month put North Somerset 9th in the whole of the country, and the second-best council of its type in England for recycling. This is an amazing achievement, testament to the hard work of residents, council staff, and our refuse teams

In 2019/20, 60.6 per cent of household waste generated in North Somerset was recycled – a 1.9% improvement on the previous year. We want to continue to improve. If we are to act on climate change, we need to do better.

During 2020 the Council also ceased using landfill for your black bin waste. Previously waste was sent to landfill sites in Cheltenham and Gloucester. It is now sent to a new energy recovery plant in Avonmouth. There it will either be recycled or used a refuse driven fuel.
