Shocking map shows what developers want to do to Long Ashton

Ashley Cartman • Feb 17, 2021

If this happens then Long Ashton will become a suburb of Bristol........

At the moment North Somerset Council is developing a Local Plan to accommodate the 20,475 homes the government says we need to build over a 15 year period. Thats represents a 20% increase and equivalent to building two new Clevedons.

Last summer the Council issued a 'call for sites', this allowed developers the opportunity to submit land for consideration. Land, that if approved as part of the Local Plan, would be brought forward for development.

The map below shows all the sites (in grey) around Long Ashton that have been proposed for development. This amounts to thousands and thousands of houses.

It's difficult to take it all in but it includes significant development. Key features would be:

  • Extension of the village towards Gatcombe Farm
  • The Festival Way path would be completely surrounded by houses.
  • Massive development down Wild Country Lane
  • Land on the other-side of the railway line would be fully developed (with no new railway station of course)
  • The open field after The Angel Inn on the left as you come into the village would disappear.
  • 'The Vale' on the other side of the bypass would be developed to accommodate thousands of houses, Yanley lane likely to become a cul-de-sac or one way.

Of course it is important to note that this is only what developers want to do, it is for North Somerset Council to decide which (if any) of these sites will be allowed. In addition, all this land is in the Green Belt which gives it extra protection. However, given the size of the housing allocation being imposed on us by central government North Somerset Council is being forced into considering development in the Green Belt and/or in areas subject to flooding.

If you want to know more I have set up a dedicated page on my website to monitor the development of the North Somerset Local Plan. It also includes lots of background information as to why all this is being done. If you have a specific concern please feel free to contact me.

What about areas around Long Ashton?

Other areas around Long Ashton are also facing the possibility of large developments. At the end of January I reported on the proposal for a 500+ house development in Failand.

The map below shows the potential for development in the wider areas surrounding Long Ashton. You can clearly see the development at Failand as well as the significant sites between Wraxall and Nailsea as well as between Flax Bourton and Backwell.

North Somerset development sites - Long Ashton, Backwell, Nailsea, Wraaxll, Failand

At the moment North Somerset Council is considering all the sites. Which sites the council allows development on will be set as a part of the local plan process. We expect to hear which sites have been chosen towards the end of 2021.
