North Somerset Council Tax set for 2021-22

The average Council tax bill across North Somerset is set to rise by 4.8% next year bringing the annual cost for a Band D property to £1,900.21. At a full council meeting at the end of February all parties voted for the increase, reflecting the enormous pressure placed on North Somerset Council resources by the Coronavirus pandemic.

How does North Somerset Council tax compare to others?

The rise in percentage terms was the same as all other councils around us (Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucs) and our council tax remains the lowest in the region and is hundreds of pounds a year lower than Bristol City Council.

Are you spending our money carefully?

Next year the council will spend £171 million. Sadly, each year costs just keep on rising. To ensure that this burden doesn’t just fall on local taxpayers we have identified £7.5m of savings and efficiencies. When I was elected in 2019 I felt that people were fed up of austerity and cuts. These savings mean that we have protected all front-line services.

Where does all the money go?

What most people are surprised about is that over half of the £171 million the council spends goes on services for vulnerable adults and children, a significant proportion being care for the elderly. The council also maintains our minor roads, collects your waste, looks after parks, provides planning services etcetera.

Can I get a discount?

Possibly yes.

It is well known that if you are the only adult in your property you receive a 25%. However, there are a number of other ways of getting a discount. There is more information on the councils website.

If you have little or no income and are of working age then the Council Tax Support Scheme could mean you are entitled to as much as a 72.5% reduction to your bill. The scheme provides 100% protection for pensioners. There is more information on the councils website.

Exactly how much will my bill be?

Ignoring any discounts (see above), everyone’s Council Tax bill will vary depending upon the ‘banding’ of their home and the Parish they live in. I have produced two tables below covering the two Parishes I represent.

I have also detailed the amount that is collected on behalf of the local Fire Authority as well as Avon and Somerset Police. These amounts are not set by North Somerset Council.
