Ban parking by the quarry on Longwood Lane?

Ashley Cartman • May 18, 2021

Do you park by the quarry on Longwood Lane and go walking in Ashton Court?
North Somerset Council is considering introducing a parking ban......

Since parking charges were introduced to Ashton Court many of us park on Longwood Lane by the quarry which allows easy access to Ashton Court. Although this is next to the quarry it seems to work well and rarely do I find there to be traffic issues. Nonetheless North Somerset Council are considering prohibiting parking here as part of a wider scheme to control parking around Ashton Court.

The map below shows where consideration is being given to introducing a clearway (which would prohibit parking).

Many of the proposed restrictions indicated in red on the above map make a lot of sense (if you're wondering why a section is green that's because it is within Bristol and hence not controlled by North Somerset Council).

Beggar Bush Lane...

Introducing better parking restrictions on Beggar Bush Lane will improve safety. I know a lot of people park here too to access Ashton Court but the road has a 50 mph speed limit and it surely only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. After all there is no lay-by, people are just parking on the verge.

I have been contacted by concerned residents over this and have been pushing for additional restrictions, it is good to see that something is being done about it.

Longwood Lane (and Providence Lane)...

My view is that there is no need to introduce parking restrictions here. I always start with what problem is seeking to be solved, in this case I am of the view that there is no significant problem. Hence, it is my intention to object to the introduction of parking restrictions here. I also note that the 'no parking' restrictions are also planned to be introduced at the top of Providence Lane. As nobody ever seems to park here I don't think they are needed either.

I need to know what you think...

I have already let council staff what I think of the proposals but I need to know what you think too. They have provisionally agreed to relook at the scheme but are keen to understand local feeling. Please let me know either by using my contact form or emailing me at ash@ashleycartman.org.uk.
