Backwell Lesiure Centre set to re-open after being saved from closure

The main swimming pool at Backwell Leisure Centre will re-open in mid-May. The centre's other facilities, including the learner pool, gym and squash courts, will re-open as planned on 1 May.

As a member of the 8 strong Executive Committee of senior Councillors at North Somerset Council I am privileged to be involved in many decisions relating to residents all over the district. As many of you know we are an alliance of different political parties but nonetheless we operate on the basis of coming to a consensus before making a decision. In the 2 years since we took office we have only ever held one vote, and that related to the potential closure of Backwell Leisure Centre.

As your local councillor I argued strongly that up here 'in the North' (so much discussion can be focused on Weston-super-Mare) we needed a swimming pool. However, the leisure centre roof was in desperate need of repair. So much so that serious consideration was given to closing the facility permanently.

Thankfully a majority of colleagues agreed with me and over the past 12 months hundreds of thousands of pounds have been spent on repairs.  The Leisure Centre is now secure for the foreseeable future.
